Light is architecture's softest language. When a projection touches a façade, brick and stone begin to blur, space begins to stretch—every building waits for an interpretation yet to be discovered. We invite artists to explore projection mapping as a medium of transformation. Whether tracing the cycles of nature, the currents of technology, or the quiet shifts of culture, let light reveal what lies dormant in walls and awaken new forms from the familiar. We believe that within every artist lies the power to witness metamorphosis—to show us not only what a place has been, but what it dares to become.
In 2026, the "Shining Shanghai" (Jing'an) International Light Art Open Call will once again be hosted at Shenyuli. Our choice is driven not only by the site's historical significance but also by its previous remarkable synergy with light art creation. We envision artists using Shenyuli as their canvas, allowing light to cultivate new narratives upon this century-old architecture. Located on the northern bank of Suzhou Creek in Jing'an District, Shanghai, Shenyuli is one of the city's largest and most representative Shikumen architectural complexes. Distinguished by its refined ornamentation, the architecture presents a distinctive character and layered spatial qualities. Today, the site combines historic preservation with contemporary commerce, culture, and arts, transforming from a vessel of urban memory into a vibrant space where heritage and creativity coexist.
